Barite
specimen number:
2063021
location:
Roger quarries, Joao Pessoa, Paraíba, Brazil
description: The geology of the Roger quarries in Joao Pessoa, Paraiba, Brazil, involves sedimentary formations where local limestone extraction exposed cavities and mineralizing fluids, historically allowing small-scale commercial and artisanal quarrying operations to develop. Within these sedimentary and limestone-associated environments, low-temperature hydrothermal or diagenetic processes facilitated the precipitation of distinct mineral specimens, most notably crystalline aggregates of barite. Over time, as industrial and building stone quarrying slowed down or ceased at these sites, the location transitioned into a notable mineral collecting locality prized by collectors for acquiring well-formed, translucent crystal rosettes and groupings.
Slightly smoky colorless gemmy tabular crystals of barite to 2.0 cm in size nice across the top of matrix. In good condition. The specimen comes with a previous label from the collection of Ray DeMark.
Size: 4.0 x 3.5 x 2.0 cm (miniature)
