Barite
specimen number:
2062805
location:
Indian Head Rock, Basin, Jefferson Co., Montana, USA
description: Indian Head Rock, located west of Basin in Jefferson County, Montana, sits within the extensive intrusive framework of the Boulder Batholith and surrounding geologic formations typical of the region's rich mining belt. While the broader area historically attracted prospectors during the late 19th and 20th century booms for precious and base metals, this specific site is renowned among mineral collectors for yielding good specimens of barite. The local mineralizing fluids produced distinct barite crystals occurring as translucent to opaque blocky dark amber colored crystals, often featuring complex growth patterns and crystal faces modified by late-stage growth or minor dissolution.
Semi lustrous mostly opaque blocky amber colored crystals of barite to 2.2 cm on edge across the top of matrix. Classic material for this locality. In excellent condition. The specimen comes with a previous label from the collection of Ray DeMark.
Size: 6.5 x 5.5 x 2.8 cm (small-cabinet)
Collection: Ray DeMark
