location:
Montreal Mine, Iron Co., Wisconsin, USA
description: The Montreal Mine in Iron County, Wisconsin, was an underground iron mine in the Gogebic Range that was developed in the late 1800s to exploit hematite iron ore in Precambrian rocks. It became one of the important iron producers in the region during the early 20th century and supported the nearby town of Montreal. Mining operations declined after World War II, and the mine closed in 1962. Today the site is part of the historic iron mining heritage of northern Wisconsin.
Thick lustrous tabular crystals of barite coming off of a hematite matrix. This is in very good condition and quite fine for this American classic.
