Azurite with Malachite
specimen number:
2063342
location:
Bisbee, Cochise Co., Arizona, USA
description: Bisbee, Arizona, founded in 1880 following early claims in the Mule Mountains, grew into one of the richest copper mining districts in the world before large-scale operations officially closed in 1975. Geologically, the area is characterized by complex Paleozoic limestone formations cut by Cretaceous-era granitic intrusions, creating massive contact metamorphic replacement and skarn orebodies. Mineralogically, the district is world-famous for its spectacular oxidized zone minerals, producing breathtaking aesthetic specimens of native copper, azurite, malachite, cuprite, and various other rare secondary copper species that have made it a legendary locality for mineral collectors globally.
Classic combination specimen for this famous locality, several sparkling spherical shaped crystal groupings of deep blue bladed azurite crystals measuring to 1.8 cm in diameter are set aesthetically across a botryoidal malachite crystal matrix. This is in very good condition. Crystallized completely all around with very little matrix attached on the fact bottom side. Very choice miniature. The specimen comes with a previous label from the collection of Ray DeMark. It is likely that this piece came from the 200 level of the Czar Mine.
Size: 4.5 x 4.0 x 2.5 cm (miniature)
