Azurite
specimen number:
2354137
location:
Mikheevskoe, Kartalinsky, Chelyabinsk Oblast, Russia
description: Located in the Kartalinsky District of Chelyabinsk Oblast, Russia, the Mikheevskoe deposit is a major porphyry copper-gold deposit situated within the Southern Urals geological region. Formed during Paleozoic magmatic activity, the ore body consists of extensive stockworks and disseminations of chalcopyrite, pyrite, and gold within hydrothermally altered intrusive rocks. Systematically surveyed during late twentieth-century geological exploration, commercial open-pit mining began under the Russian Copper Company in 2013 to extract its massive low-grade reserves. While primarily celebrated as a large-scale industrial operation, the mine has also produced mineralogical specimens for regional collectors, who study its assemblage of sulfides, primary ore oxides, and associated supergene minerals typical of South Uralian porphyry systems.
An opened nodule of azurite, the interior coated with sparkling attractive blue micro crystals of azurite. In great condition and a very attractive thumbnail specimen.
