Axinite-Fe
specimen number:
2351053
location:
Jensen Quarry, Riverside Co., California, USA
description: Located in the Jurupa Mountains of Riverside County, California, the Jensen Quarry formed through contact metamorphism where granitic batholithic rocks intruded into older metasedimentary crystalline limestone and marble. Operations began during World War I to supply commercial limestone and marble, and the site remained active until it was abandoned in 1979. World-renowned among mineralogists and rockhounds for its exceptional metamorphic mineralization, Jensen Quarry became famous for field collecting specimens of calcite, grossular garnet, hornblende, wollastonite, and various rare contact-metamorphic skarn minerals.
Bladed crystals of translucent lustrous axinite on matrix. Minimal damage present, still a good locality example for the species.
