Axinite-Fe
specimen number:
2062986
location:
Colebrook Mine, Rosebery, Tasmania, Australia
description: The Colebrook Mine, situated on Colebrook Hill near Rosebery in western Tasmania, Australia, features complex geology characterized by massive sulfide lodes hosted within rugged, folded terrain. Discovered during the late nineteenth century silver and copper prospecting booms, the site underwent extensive exploratory work, including adits, shafts, and diamond drilling, driven by high hopes for base metal extraction. Despite periods of intense optimism and significant capital investment by prominent mining entrepreneurs, the ore proved too low in grade and difficult to economically smelt or concentrate on a commercial scale, leading to its eventual closure in the early twentieth century.
An open pocket 2.5 x 2.0 cm in size lined with clove shaped crystals of axinite to 0.4 cm in size. Minor quartz is present as well. In good condition. The specimen comes with a previous label from the collection of Ray DeMark.
Size: 6.0 x 6.0 x 3.0 cm (miniature)
