Raipa is a small mining locality situated in the Aija Province of the Ancash Department in west-central Peru, an area with a rich history rooted in ancient pre-Inca cultures like the Recuay civilization as well as centuries of subsequent mineral extraction. Geologically, the region is characterized by complex Andean cordillera formations, featuring rugged terrains shaped by tectonic activity, intrusive magmatism, and hydrothermal processes that created diverse metallic and non-metallic mineral deposits. Within this localized geological setting, the Raipa Mine has gained recognition among mineral collectors for producing exceptional specimens of axinite, typically found as sharp, clove-brown or reddish-brown bladed crystal plates formed through hydrothermal alteration and contact metamorphism in the surrounding host rocks.
