Arsenopyrite
specimen number:
2063299
location:
Dufferin mines, Halifax Co., Nova Scotia, Canada
description: Located in Port Dufferin within Halifax County, Nova Scotia, Canada, the Dufferin mine is situated in the megacrystic greywackes, quartzites, and slate beds of the Cambrian-Ordovician Meguma Group. The ore geology features gold-bearing quartz veins structured along tight saddle-reef folds and anticlinal domes, typical of Nova Scotia gold fields. Gold was first discovered in the district in 1868, leading to significant commercial development by 1880 that established Dufferin as one of the most productive gold mines in the province during the late nineteenth century. Beyond historic native gold production, mineral collectors value the deposit for fine quartz matrix specimens, along with associated iron and arsenic sulfide minerals such as arsenopyrite and pyrite.
Interesting locality example for the species, this a lustrous metallic double terminated crystal of arsenopyrite measuring 1.4 x 1.2 x 0.2 cm in size frozen up on matrix. In good condition. The specimen comes with a previous label from the collection of Ray DeMark.
Size: 3.3 x 3.0 x 1.2 cm (miniature)
