Aragonite
specimen number:
2063391
location:
Minglanilla, Cuenca, Castile-La Mancha, Spain
description: Situated in the province of Cuenca within Castile-La Mancha, Spain, Minglanilla is famous among collectors as a classic locality for exceptional twinned aragonite crystals. The surrounding geology consists primarily of Triassic sedimentary formations, including gypsum and clay rich Keuper facies. Mineralization occurred through low-temperature groundwater fluids precipitating calcium carbonate within these soft clay beds. Artisanal extraction and specimen collecting in the region date back many decades, yielding iconic cyclic trilling twins that form distinctive pseudo-hexagonal prisms. These specimens are highly prized for their sharp crystal geometry, reddish-brown to purple hues, and historical importance in European mineralogy.
Classic material for the species, a cluster of two purple lustrous translucent pseudo-hexagonal twinned aragonite crystals attached aesthetically and in good condition. Complete all around with no points of attachment. This is a floater. The specimen comes with a previous label from the collection of Ray DeMark.
Size: 3.5 x 3.5 x 3.5 cm (miniature)
