Aragonite
specimen number:
2063207
location:
Tazouta, Sefrou Cercle, Fes-Meknes, Morocco
description: Tazouta, located in the Sefrou Cercle of the Fes-Meknes region in Morocco, is internationally celebrated as one of the world's premier localities for specimen aragonite. Geologically, the deposits sit within sedimentary strata where near-surface weathering and precipitation within red clay layers formed favorable conditions for crystal growth. Mineralogically, the site is famous for producing exceptional cyclic twins and pseudohexagonal clusters of aragonite. These distinct orange to white prismatic crystals often radiate from a common center to form symmetrical, highly aesthetic groups. Historically, specimen recovery at these shallow surface workings has been active for several decades, supplying the international mineral market with abundant, high-quality display pieces.
A loose floater grouping of attractive pseudo-hexagonal lustrous translucent aragonite crystals. Complete all around and in good condition with no points of attachment. Classic locality for the species. The specimen comes with a previous label from the collection of Ray DeMark.
Size: 5.0 x 4.5 x 3.0 cm (miniature)
