Annabergite
specimen number:
2351044
location:
Lavrion, Attica, Greece
description: Located in Attica, Greece, the historic Lavrion mining district consists of complex metamorphic sequences, primarily marble and schist contacts, enriched by hydrothermal systems that produced significant lead, silver, copper, and zinc mineralization. Active for over 5,000 years, Lavrion provided the wealth of silver that famously financed the Athenian fleet in classical times and experienced revival through modern mining operations into the late 20th century. Today, the region is world-renowned among mineral collectors for its exceptional secondary oxidation minerals, including prized specimens of annabergite. Annabergite forms as a distinctive bright apple-green hydrous nickel arsenate coating or radial crystalline aggregate, originating from the oxidation and weathering of primary nickel-bearing sulfide and arsenide ores in the district's oxidized mineral zones.
Classic Greek specimen for the species with rich green sparkling micro crystals of annabergite across the front of matrix. In good condition. At one time this was part of the collection of Jack Parnau, who the mineral parnauite was named after.
Size: 5.5 x 3.0 x 2.0 cm (miniature)
