Andradite
specimen number:
2063557
location:
Stanley Butte, Graham Co., Arizona, USA
description: Located in Graham County, Arizona, Stanley Butte Click to open side panel for more information is a remote mountainous area characterized by complex geological formations involving sedimentary and metamorphic rock units intruded by igneous rocks. Contact metasomatism and hydrothermal alteration in these formations created favorable conditions for skarn mineral deposits, attracting mineral collectors and prospectors over the decades. The site is particularly famous among collectors for producing exceptional specimens of andradite garnet, which often crystallizes in distinct, well-formed greenish-brown to black crystals within the altered limestone and skarn zones. While small-scale prospecting and historical mining efforts occurred in the region, access is generally difficult due to rugged terrain and remote conditions, making Stanley Butte primarily known today as a classic locality for high-quality garnet mineral specimens.
The top of this matrix is beautifully covered with lustrous crystals of sharply formed andradite to 1.0 cm in size. This is in good condition. The specimen comes with a previous label from the collection of Ray DeMark. Originally collected by Bill Hawes.
