Anatase
specimen number:
2063081
location:
Hardangervidda, Eidfjord, Vestland, Norway
description: The Hardangervidda mountain plateau in Vestland, Norway, features a complex geological foundation primarily composed of ancient Precambrian basement rocks and overlying Caledonian nappe structures formed during ancient tectonic collisions. Historically, the region has seen very little commercial mining, but it is internationally famous among mineral collectors for extraordinary alpine-type fissure veins that yield pristine quartz crystals. Within these cavities, collectors discovered world-class specimens of the rare mineral anatase, which typically forms sharp, metallic to brightly colored pyramidal crystals often perched directly on quartz matrices. Because key localities like Matskorhae and Storenut are situated in remote, protected environments, modern collecting is strictly regulated or prohibited, making historical specimens preserved in museums and private collections exceptionally rare and valuable.
A large sharp deep bluish black metallic lustrous crystal of anatase. Very little attached matrix. The specimen comes with a previous label from the collection of Ray DeMark.
