Alum-K

specimen number:
2354157

location:
Silver Peak, Esmeralda Co., Nevada, USA

description:
A large colorless sparkling slightly translucent crystalline masses of alum-K. Very good hand sized example for the species.

Located in the Silver Peak Range of Esmeralda County, Nevada, the Silver Peak district features a complex geological structure dominated by Precambrian metamorphic rocks, Tertiary volcanic sequences, and extensive lacustrine salt flats in the adjacent Clayton Valley. Originally established during the 1860s following rich discoveries of silver and gold in epithermal quartz veins, the region sustained decades of hard-rock mining before later shifting toward large-scale lithium brine extraction from playa deposits. Hydrothermal alteration and secondary weathering of sulfur-bearing minerals within the area's volcanic and metamorphic rocks generated local sulfate occurrences, including alum-K, which forms as soluble white crusts, efflorescences, and micro-crystals in protected rock fractures. Although historic underground operations and modern lithium workings dominate the landscape, field collectors value the district for its diverse suite of secondary mineral species, hydrothermal vein samples, and delicate sulfate crusts preserved in the arid Great Basin climate.
