location:
Sedalia mine, Chaffee Co., Colorado, USA
description: The Sedalia Mine in Chaffee County, Colorado, is a historical Proterozoic stratabound zinc and copper deposit situated within a complex metamorphic terrain of schists, gneisses, and amphibolites. Discovered in the late nineteenth century, the site was actively worked for base metals and precious metals until operations wound down in the early twentieth century. Beyond its history as a metal producer, the mine achieved international renown among mineral collectors for yielding world-class almandine garnet specimens. These garnets formed within the regional metamorphic rocks under high-pressure conditions, frequently developing sharp, well-defined crystal forms embedded in schist or weathered out as loose, highly sought-after collector pieces.
A good large matrix example for the species and locality, a semi lustrous brown sharp crystal of almandine 4.0 x 4.0 x 3.7 cm in size on one edge of a green schist matrix. In good condition. The specimen comes with a previous label from the collection of Ray DeMark. He collected the piece in 2016.
Size: 14.5 x 7.0 x 4.0 cm (cabinet)
