Greens Farm in Roxbury, Connecticut, is a legendary mineral collecting locality rather than a traditional commercial mine, serving for decades as a popular fee-dig site for rockhounds before closing to the public in late 2012 when the property was sold to private landowners who revoked access. Geologically, the site is defined by extensive deposits of metamorphic mica schist and gneiss. Within this rugged matrix, intense regional heat and pressure fostered the growth of remarkable almandine garnet crystals. These dark wine-red to nearly black garnets frequently formed distinct dodecahedral shapes measuring up to an inch or more across, and they could often be found weathered loose in the surrounding soil or easily collected from old woodland tailings.
