Actinolite
specimen number:
2354032
location:
Ijaka, Kongwa, Dodoma, Tanzania
description: Situated within the Neoproterozoic Mozambique Belt of the Kongwa District in the Dodoma Region, Tanzania, the Ijaka area is composed of high-grade metamorphic rocks such as schists and amphibolites that underwent intense tectonic deformation. In recent years, the locality gained widespread attention among collectors and gem prospectors after producing outstanding mineral specimens, most notably lustrous, blocky, dark green to black crystals of actinolite set against contrasting matrix rocks. An intermediate silicate mineral in the amphibole group, actinolite forms in these regionally metamorphosed environments, making the specimens from Ijaka prized additions to international mineral collections due to their unusual size and sharp crystal definition.
Choice thumbnail for the species, a lustrous dark green loose sharp double terminated crystal of actinolite without matrix. This is in great condition.
Size: 2.3 x 1.3 x 0.5 cm (thumbnail)
