Actinolite
specimen number:
2063540
location:
Kragero, Telemark, Norway
description: Situated along the coast of Telemark within the Mesoproterozoic Bamble Sector of the Baltic Shield, Kragero is world-renowned for its complex metamorphic geology, dominated by amphibolites, pegmatites, quartzites, and unique titanium-bearing intrusive rocks known locally as krageroidite. Beginning in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, intensive commercial mining operations targeted these igneous and metamorphic formations to extract high-grade deposits of rutile, ilmenite, apatite, quartz, and nickel. These rich geological structures, particularly the pegmatite veins and intrusive bodies at classical historic sites such as Lindvikskollen, produced exceptional cabinet-quality specimens of deep-red rutile crystals, black tourmaline, lustrous ilmenite, albite, and large hornblende crystals. Today, while large-scale mining activity has ceased, the historic quarry dumps and outcrops across the archipelago remain a celebrated landmark for mineralogists and field collectors worldwide.
Choice example for the species, this is a loose lustrous deep green striated double terminated crystal of actinolite, each termination hosting acicular crystallized actinolite. Complete all around and in great condition.
