location:
Tsumeb Mine, Tsumeb, Otjikoto Region, Namibia
description: Azurite specimens from Tsumeb have set the "standard" for the species. Some of the largest crystals of fine quality known have come from this now closed locality. The specimen shown here is from the first oxidation zone, taken out of the mine around 1930. The specimen consists of a 12.2 x 11.4 x 6.5 cm breccia matrix, this hosting numerous excellent blocky yet prismatic terminated azurite crystals. The largest measures 6.7 cm in length, 3.7 cm in width. There is no damage or chipping. Minor green malachite is present as well. The overall quality is superb. A fine cabinet sized "museum quality" piece from this famous locality! Ex Wolfgang E. Henkel collection. Ref: Gebhard, G. (1999): Tsumeb II. A Unique Mineral Locality.
